Wendell Berry on Not Knowing Where to Go

Middlesex Fells Reservation

Listless? Lost? Maybe not:

It may be that when we no longer know what to do
we have come to our real work,

and that when we no longer know which way to go
we have come to our real journey.

The mind that is not baffled is not employed.

The impeded stream is the one that sings.

“Our Real Work,” by Wendell Berry

  1. But, but, but–that condition of disequilibrium is just so completely uncomfortable Lord, surely you would lead me to green pastures and then have me rest rest by the still waters! What is that you said? Work, sacrifice, caring for others and more? What was that again Lord about not doing this alone? Oh, I’m sorry Lord, I forgot for a moment that it is about all of us together with You empowering us. Thank you for reminding me Lord, I feel much better now.

What do you think?
