It’s been a great year! Thank you–wait… wrong platform.
It’s a little silly, but WordPress.com put together a 2014 report for Words on the Word.
Here’s an excerpt from the report, which has fun data about page views, most-visited posts, top commenters, etc.:
The Louvre Museum has 8.5 million visitors per year. This blog was viewed about 98,000 times in 2014. If it were an exhibit at the Louvre Museum, it would take about 4 days for that many people to see it.
Last week Accordance released two new IVP “black dictionaries.” Both cover the Old Testament. There is Wisdom, Poetry & Writings and Prophets.
Here’s a screen grab from the Accordance page–they’re on sale through midnight EST tonight, and still reasonably priced after that.
Prophets (click image below for product page):
Wisdom, Poetry & Writings (click image below for product page):
These IVP dictionaries are really good. I usually use whatever volume I own when preparing sermons.
And Accordance 11 (just released this fall) is a nice way to use these dictionaries. You can try especially sophisticated searches with them in Accordance, like this one.
If you’ve used either of these dictionaries, I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments. So far, I’ve really appreciated everything else from this series.
You order now through CBD or Amazon… OR… if you want it at 50% off, you can go to Hendrickson’s booth at the upcoming ETS (booth 222) and SBL/AAR (booth 718) conferences, and find it in its two different bindings, priced at $29.97 (from $59.95 retail) and $39.97 (from $79.95).
For $19 (until 9:00 a.m. EST on Wednesday, October 29), Amazon’s Fire TV Stick is on sale:
Fire TV Stick connects your HDTV to a world of online entertainment. With a huge selection of movies and TV episodes, voice search that actually works, and exclusive features like ASAP and Prime Music, Fire TV Stick is an easy way to enjoy Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu Plus, low-cost movie rentals, live and on-demand sports, music, photos, games, and more.
According the the product page, you plug the stick in at your HDMI port, connect to the Internet, and then watch any number of shows and movies and subscription services through your TV.
(Words on the Word is an Amazon affiliate, which means Amazon pays us back with a portion of any referrals. We would have posted about the Fire TV Stick anyway.)
This is easily the most awesome piece of clothing I have ever seen:
And the Teespring “campaign” that offers it has enough pre-orders that it will go into production again! So you can order one now before the window closes.
Read details about Teespring and how it works here. You can go get the shirt ($20) or hoodie ($30) here.
A helpful language reference tool for students, pastors, and scholars. The BHS Reader’s Edition is for those who have a basic understanding of Biblical Hebrew and desire to read and study the Hebrew Bible. With this book alone (and a year’s study of Hebrew), students are able to read the Hebrew Bible in its entirety.
Zondervan already has such a Bible, which is the first Hebrew Bible from which I ever read (cue strings). But BHS Reader’s Edition has vocabulary helps for even more words, as well as verb parsings.
Here are the main features, in the words of the publisher:
Complete text of the Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia, checked against the Leningrad Codex
All words that occur fewer than 70 times are parsed and contextually defined in the apparatus
Glossary listing of all other words
Improved layout of poetic text
All weak verb forms are parsed
High quality paper does not bleed through
UPDATE: One of the authors (not Moses, though) notes that it includes full Hebrew paradigms, too. Looks like it will really be a one-stop shop for Hebrew Bible reading!
You can pre-order now through CBD or Amazon (affiliate link that helps support Words on the Word).
Today (Wednesday), Dietrich Bonhoeffer Works, English Edition (DBWE, 16 volumes) are $99 in Olive Tree Bible software. I have not seen DBWE in Olive Tree, but have reviewed the app here.
Their iOS and desktop apps are free, so if you like Bonhoeffer and have the cash, this is probably the best price for his complete works in English that one will ever find. (It does not include the just released Volume 17.)
Last weekend I built a sandbox; this weekend I’m cleaning up the study. I have a few books I’m trying to unload. Contact me here if you’re interested.
Simplified Guide to BHS (Hebrew Bible) (Scott, 1990 Second Edition, includes Ruger’s English Key to Latin Words, bound together), hard to find in print. One page has writing, but is helpful to understanding text. Previous owner’s name inside front cover; sticker residue on back (slight). $20
Handkonkordanz zum Griechischen Neuen Testament (English and German) Super-handy small concordance to Greek New Testament… I just don’t have use for it recently. See reviews at Amazon link here. Good to Very Good condition (sticker on back, some regular wear, but clean inside and strong binding). $22
C.L. Seow’s Grammar for Biblical Hebrew (1987)
Pencil notations throughout (one page pen), otherwise great condition. Old sticker on back. $10
The increasingly hard-to-find NIV Triglot Old Testament
Yes, English, Greek and Hebrew. It’s a big and impressive-looking hardback. Really good condition. Name inside front cover. No markings that I’m aware of. No dust cover (but you were just going to take that off as soon as you got it anyway, right?). $22
Behold, the Triglot
Spurgeon’s 3-Volume Treasury of David
Commentary on the Psalms, hardcover (green dust jackets). Hardly used, in great shape. One volume has a small coffee splash on page edges. Not a set of books I’d normally want to part with, but I have it electronically now. $29
Dietrich Bonhoeffer Works, Volume 7 (Fiction from Tegel Prison)
Hardcover. Brand new, still in shrink wrap. $14
Dietrich Bonhoeffer Works, Volume 9 (The Young Bonhoeffer, 1918-1927)
Hardcover. Still in original shrink wrap. Just a tiny bit of bumping to spine edges, one corner ever-so-slightly dinged. $20
Dietrich Bonhoeffer Works, Volume 10 (Barcelona, Berlin, New York: 1928-1931)
Hardcover. Dust jacket, page edges, and corners show some wear/bumping, but not much. Insides unmarked, never used. $25
Yesterday I received the concluding Volume 17, Index and Supplementary Materials. Take a look inside–this is a fittingly well-done volume to complete the set. (Make sure you click the gear icon to watch in HD.)
My friend James Harris Moore is making a record, and it’s going to be awesome. He is a longtime friend and stellar musician and songwriter. I gave him a guitar lesson or two way back in the day, though shortly thereafter he eclipsed my ability both as a guitarist and writer. I’ve had the privilege of recording and playing with him a few times over the years.
Here is the Kickstarter page he’s using to fund the recording. He’s very close to his goal, but there are a few days left to get a pre-order in via a pledge.
Here’s a track, so you can get a taste of the goodness that will soon be ours to enjoy:
